Diopter tube test device

Overview

Every night vision eyepiece has a wide diopter adjustment range, and "it looks sharp to me" is not a measurement. This handheld diopter tube reads the actual diopter setting of an eyepiece instead of leaving it to a technician's judgement, so a unit leaves the bench at the value it is supposed to be at. We use it three ways on our own line: during assembly, after any repair that touches the eyepiece, and at final inspection before a unit ships. It works on the eyepiece assemblies of PVS-14 style monoculars, the BNVD-1431 MK2, PVS-31 style binoculars, and PNVG-18 panoramic units. There is nothing to mount and nothing to plug in. You zero the tube on a distant object, hold it against the eyepiece under test in a darkened room, and take the reading. If you build, service, or accept night vision units, this is the difference between a documented setting and an opinion.

How to Operate

1) Zero the test device's own eyepiece and confirm the zero against a distant object;

2) In a darkened room, bring the objective end of the test device up against the eyepiece of the unit being checked;

3) Take the reading for that unit's current diopter setting;

4) Adjust the unit's eyepiece and read again, repeating until the setting sits at the specified value;
