PVS-14 TUBE RETAINER RING

Overview

The retainer ring is what holds the image tube down in its seat. It presses on the most expensive single part in the whole goggle, and it has to press square, with even load all the way around. Let it go down cocked or unevenly loaded and the tube sits slightly off-center, which shows up in the picture as an image that is not centered in its circle. That is why this ring gets changed so often during builds and rebuilds: reusing a tired one is a poor trade against the part sitting directly underneath it. The matching installation tool grips the ring so it cannot slip while you are seating it.

How to Operate

1) With the image tube in its seat, set the retainer ring in place by hand and check that it is sitting square before any load goes on it;

2) Bring the ring down with the matching installation tool, working evenly so the load stays the same all the way around;

3) Power the unit and look at the image: it should sit centered in its circle;

4) If it sits off-center, back the ring off and re-seat it rather than tightening further;

Why the ARGUS Part

These are cut for the tube seats in ARGUS housings, so the ring meets the seat flat and the clamping load lands evenly all the way around, where the housing was built to take it.

The reason to fit a new one rather than reuse the old one is what sits under it — the ring presses directly on the image tube, and an off-center picture is what you get if it goes down cocked. Change it whenever the tube comes out, and seat it with the matching installation tool so it cannot slip.
